I've had the pleasure of teaching a dedicated and enthusiastic group of 10-15 students in an afterschool Fashion Design program at Canarsie High School (in Brooklyn, NY) for two years now. I have been touched by their commitment to the group and to our program, and to the development of their creative skills.

Last year, it was announced that Canarsie H.S. will be closing in the Spring of 2011 due to overall low performance. As a result, their school is no longer eligible for the grant which provided afterschool programs.

In addition to budget issues, while Canarsie High School is being phased out, a new school has already started to take over part of the building (with visible resources not available to Canarsie students), creating a very low morale within students and teachers of the "old school".

I am not willing to participate in the notion that Canarsie students are not worthy of such programs as those of the new school, as they are currently being led to believe.

It's clear to me that they need this extra-curricular activity-- not only to learn design-related skills and to have a space where they can express their creativity freely, but also to develop a more personal relationship with skills such as math, writing, and social studies in order to become invested in their own education.

Over the past 2 years, my students here have demonstrated a level of commitment that I am not willing to break.
At the moment, we are operating on a $0 budget, and I'm trying to raise funds to cover snack expenses for the 24 sessions I've committed to (which started in mid-November).

Any amount you can donate would be greatly appreciated, but if I can just get 10 people to commit to $15, that will be a big step in the right direction.

Girls institutes programs are highly dedicated towards assisting their students to achieve their goal and get a successful career.
